1. Always read up on the history and the nature of the company to whom you are applying to.
2. Make sure you look presentable. Wear a suit and tie to the interview.
3. Do not smoke before the interview or chew gum during it.
4. Take a copy of your CV and read it before you enter the interview room to recap with what you have written about yourself.
5. Make sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the interview; it shows that you're keen and eager. Plan your route before hand and take into consideration any delays or traffic along your route before you decide on a time to set off.
6. Greet the interviewer by Mr or Ms and then their surname and look alert and interested during the interview. Wait until you have been offered a chair before you sit down and always smile. You never get a second chance to make a first impression!
7. Answer the interview questions with detail but do not go on for too long.
8. Do not raise any salary questions during the first interview and avoid complaining about your current or former employers.
9. Make sure you identify some minor weaknesses with your skills and then explain to the interviewer how you're working towards turning it into a strong point. Interviewers like to ask candidates about their weaknesses.
10. Always be positive and ask questions at the end such as what the company dress code is, do they expect overtime and always show that you're eager. Some good questions to ask are:
Are there any induction and training programs available?
Why is the current position available?
What are the company growth plans?
Do they encourage employees to seek promotion?
11. At the end of the interview thank the interviewer for their time.
